CAP: 4-15cm in diameter. Starting convex then becoming flattened or slightly depressed the kidney to shell -shaped fruiting bodies have smooth, pale to dark greyish-brown surfaces with inrolled margins. The margins become wavy with age. STIPE: Lateral, eccentric or rudimentary (occasionally absent) with a woolly base. GILLS/PORES: Gills are white becoming yellowish and are decurrent. FLESH: Thick with a distinct pleasant smell. SPORES: Lilac, sub-cylindric. HABITAT: In layered clusters on dead and living broadleaf trees. Sometimes very numerous. SEASON: Frequent. Autumn to early winter. EDIBILITY: Edible - one of the best. |
